Whether you drive an automatic or a manual: your transmission is essential. Transmission fluid operates at very high temperatures \u2014 the right fluid keeps everything running smoothly and extends the life of your gearbox. Check it regularly, even monthly: it only takes a few minutes.<\/p>\n

\"Checking<\/p>\n

Step-by-step (automatic)<\/h2>\n

On a manual car the vehicle needs jacking up \u2014 leave that to a mechanic. On an automatic:<\/p>\n

Park on level, well-ventilated ground and let the engine run for 5\u201310 minutes to warm up. Keep it running during the check.<\/p>\n

Open the bonnet and secure it.<\/p>\n

Locate the transmission fluid dipstick (usually lower than the engine oil dipstick \u2014 check your manual if unsure).<\/p>\n

Pull it out, wipe clean, reinsert and read immediately. The fluid should reach the \u201cfull\u201d mark.<\/p>\n

Check the fluid is clear and feels smooth. Particles in it, or a burnt smell or look? Have a mechanic inspect it.<\/p>\n

Need a top-up? Pour slowly through a funnel, taking care not to overfill.<\/p>\n

Replace the dipstick and close the bonnet.<\/p>\n
