Engine Oil Light On: What Now?

Your engine can’t talk, but it can warn you — via the oil light on your dashboard. If it comes on, never ignore it: it’s a signal that your engine or engine oil needs checking urgently.

Possible causes

The oil light may come on because the oil level is too low, the oil pump has failed, the oil pressure sensor has an issue, or there’s a blockage somewhere in the oil system. Whatever the cause: take it seriously and investigate as soon as possible. Driving on with the oil light on can cause serious engine damage.

What should you do?

Light comes on while driving? Pull over as soon as it’s safe.

Switch off the engine immediately and let it cool down.

Check the oil level with the dipstick.

Level too low? Top up with the right Mobil oil and restart the engine to see if the light goes out.

Contact a mechanic to investigate the cause further.
